Men’s Golf Completes Day One Action at NCAA Division III Championship

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Elms College men's golf team completed day one action of the 2013-14 NCAA Division III Championship at Grandover Golf Course East on Tuesday afternoon with a score of 338 and is currently sitting in 38th place.

The Blazers, who won the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) Championship in October and earned the program's first-ever bid to the NCAA tournament, were led by freshman Chris Miele (South Hadley, Mass.) who carded a day one score of 79 and senior Henry Fall (Harpswell, Maine) who was one stroke off that pace with a total of 80.

Brian Burt of Hampden-Sydney College shot the low score of the day – a five-under-par 67. Buddy Hallman of the University of Texas at Tyler placed second with a 68, while Jeff Wells of Methodist University and Jordan Cowart of Southwestern University each carded a round of 69 to finish in a tie for third place in the field of 210 golfers.

Schreiner University led the field of 41 teams with a day one total of 285 and Methodist finished in second with a combination of 286. LaGrange College placed third (290) and Texas at Tyler and Hope College each tabbed scored of 291 to tie for fourth. Rhodes College (292) placed sixth, Guilford College and Middlebury College tied for seventh with a score of 294, and Berry College, St. John Fisher College and Oglethorpe University each tied for ninth place with a round of 295.

Elms' junior Nick Smith (Enfield, Conn.) shot an 89, senior Tyler Cudnik (Hampden, Mass.) followed with a 90 and sophomore Brian Benson (Agawam, Mass.) registered a score of 98 on day one.

Elms will tee-off for round two on Wednesday, May 14 at 8:15 a.m. at Grandover Golf Course West.
