Elms Clutches Home Opener in Final Seconds Against Gators

CHICOPEE, MA - The Elms College start their season off with a three point win over the Sage College Gators. Blazers first year Trey Sabia cashed in a three pointer to give Elms the lead with only thirty seconds left in the game.

How it happened

The Blazers had a slow start to begin the game, trailing behind the Gators for most of the first half. With a field goal percentage of 43.8%, Sage led the half knocking down 14 out of 32 attempts at the hoop. Elms had the same amout of attempts, but fell short only hitting 9 out of 32 field goals with a percentage of 28.1% in the first 20 minutes. Despite the score the Blazers were battleing under the hoop and led in rebounds with a total of 24, while the Gators only attained 18. Sage led by sixteen points heading into halftime, 34-22.

Slowly the Blazers began to chip away at the Gators lead. Elms would end up almost doubling their shooting percentage, hitting 14-29 FG attempts with a 48.3% in the second half. Adding to this the Blazers would also take 13 three point shots, clutching 6 of them in the second half alone. with the score tied up 56-56 with 30 seconds left on the clock, Elms had the ball out of bounds at the half court line on the fans side of the court. Jaijuan Macklin (Sayerville, NJ) imbounded the ball and would dribble it to the top of the key, finding teammate Trey Sabia (West Simsbury, CT) on the wing, the first year would recieve the pass with eyes on the rim. Sabia face gaurded three feet deep outside the three, would pull up clutching the three pointer taking the lead for the Blazers. The Gators would be able to get one last layup before sending teron Griffin to the line where he would sink both foul shots with only 5 seconds left on the clock. The Elms College Men's Basketball Team would clintch the season home opener, 1-0 in the 2022 season.

  • Dominique Threatt (Birmingham, AL) started his season with an 18 point game, leading the Blazers in points and 5 assists
  • RJ Mayfield (Springfield, MA) would dominate in the paint with 12 rebounds, with 4 assists and 7 points
  • Blazers had a 61.5% Free Throw percentage for the game.
