PROVIDENCE R.I. – Elms College sophomores Yonalvy Acosta (Holyoke, Mass.) and Mike Kleckner (Bethlehem, Pa.) each smashed a team-high nine kills, but Johnson & Wales University received a 14-kill effort from Mark Garlock (East Greenwich, R.I.) to help lift the Wildcats to a 3-0 (18-30, 22-30, 22-30) sweep of the Blazers in Tuesday evening’s non-conference men’s volleyball match at Harborside RAC in Providence, R.I.

With the loss, Elms slides to 4-18 on the season, while Johnson & Wales improves to 8-14 overall.

Acosta and Kleckner provided much of Elms’ offensive output as junior setter Mike Ryan (Ludlow, Mass.) directed the charge, dishing out 24 assists. He also found freshman outside hitter Stephen Cameron (Newington, Conn.) for five kills.

Acosta led the squad in digs with nine, while Cameron notched seven. Acosta added a pair of solo blocks, while sophomore outside hitter Mike Martin (Enfield, Conn.) notched a solo stuff and assisted on two other blocks.

Garlock, Eric Minnich (Concord, Calif.) and Tim Haley (West Warwick, R.I.) combined for 34 of Johnson & Wales 41 kills, while Chris Gauch (Coventry, R.I.) dug a match-high 13 balls in the winning effort.

Minnich, Garlock and Steven Velez (San Antonio, Texas) added eight digs apiece, while Minnich tallied two solo blocks and three assisted blocks.

Elms returns to North East Collegiate Volleyball Association (NECVA) New England Division and New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) action on Thursday, March 18. First-serve is set for 7:00 p.m. in Cambridge, Mass.
