NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – Elms College sophomore
outside hitter Yonalvy Acosta (Holyoke, Mass.)
smashed a team-best eight kills against No. 14 MIT and finished
with 13 total kills during men’s volleyball action in day two
of the 2010 New Paltz Tournament on Saturday.
Elms lost to MIT, 3-0 (13-30, 20-30, 23-30) and was swept by No.
10 Baruch College, 3-0 (14-30, 12-30, 21-30). The Blazers are now
1-6 on the season.
Acosta delivered a stellar performance in Elms’ opening
match, blasting eight kills and registering eight digs and three
solo blocks.
Sophomore setter Mike Martin (Enfield, Conn.)
directed the offense, handing out 13 assists while adding seven
digs in the losing effort.
Against 10th-ranked Baruch, Acosta led the Blazers, terminating a
team-high five balls, while Martin dished out 11 helpers.
Freshman middle hitter Stephen Cameron (Newington,
Conn.) downed four kills and dug a team-high five balls in
addition to two solo blocks.
Sophomore outside hitter Juan Carlos Salmeron
(Springfield, Mass.) added a pair of stuff blocks, while
sophomore middle hitter Aaron Coifman (Caracas,
Venezuela) added two solo blocks and assisted on two.
The Blazers return to North East Collegiate Volleyball Association
(NECVA) action on Thursday, Jan. 28 when they host Regis College.
First-serve is slated for 7:00 p.m. at Picknelly Arena.
