CHICOPEE, Mass. – Elms College sophomore opposite hitter Mike Kleckner (Bethlehem, Pa.) downed a team-best four kills, but Endicott received a match-high nine-kill effort from Jeremey Siden (Natick, Mass.) and the Gulls hit .443 (40K, 9E, 70TA) for the match to help secure a 3-0 (30-7, 30-13, 30-12) sweep of the Blazers in Monday evening’s North East Collegiate Volleyball Association (NECVA) New England Division men’s volleyball match at Picknelly Arena.

With the loss, Elms falls to 1-2 overall, 1-2 in NECVA action, while Endicott improves to 1-2 on the season, 1-0 in league play.

Endicott raced to a 19-1 lead in the opening set behind a balanced offensive attack highlighted by three kills from John Emery (Westford, Mass.), and two each from Matt Devendorf (Glastonbury, Conn.) and Zeke Kubisch (Bethlehem, N.H.). The Gulls closed out the frame by scoring 11 of the next 18 points to take a 1-0 lead in the contest.

In the second stanza, Endicott built an 11-4 lead before a pair of Gulls’ miscues and a Kleckner kill brought the Blazers to within six at 13-7. Endicott then scored five straight points and 13 of the next 17 to take a 26-11 lead. A Gulls’ attacking error and a service ace from freshman outside hitter Stephen Cameron (Newington, Conn.) cut the gap to 26-13, but a kill each from AJ Witkofsky (Scotia, N.Y.) and Kubisch, and a pair of service aces from Siden sealed the second set victory and gave Endicott a 2-0 lead in the match.

The Gulls again got off to a rapid start in the third stanza, posting an 11-2 lead which blossomed into a 23-9 advantage. Elms cut its deficit to 27-12 before Endicott closed out the match with a kill and an ace from Sliden, and a kill by Andrew Slocum (Burnt Hills, N.Y.).

Cameron finished with three kills and a team-high five digs in the losing effort for the Blazers while sophomore setter Mike Martin (Enfield, Conn.) issued five assists.
