NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – Elms College sophomore
outside hitter Yonalvy Acosta (Holyoke, Mass.)
totaled eight kills in the first day of men’s volleyball
action at the 2010 New Paltz Tournament on Friday.
Elms was swept by No. 15 Emmanuel College 3-0 (11-30, 17-30, 12-30)
and suffered a 3-0 defeat at the hands of host New Paltz, 3-0
(15-30, 12-30, 22-30) to move to 1-4 overall.
Acosta downed six of his eight kills in the opening match against
Emmanuel, and assisted on five blocks. Freshman outside hitter
Stephen Cameron (Newington, Conn.) and sophomore
middle hitter Aaron Coifman (Caracas, Venezuela)
added three kills each in the losing effort, while Cameron added a
team-best eight digs.
Sophomore setter Mike Martin (Enfield, Conn.)
collected 13 of his 24 total assists against the Saints.
Against New Paltz, Cameron, sophomore defensive specialist
Juan Carlos Salmeron (Springfield, Mass.) and
freshman middle hitter Wilfrido Fermin (Bronx,
N.Y.) smashed three kills each, while Salmeron and Acosta
dug four balls apiece.
Acosta added five solo stuffs in the losing effort.
The Blazers return to New Paltz tournament action, Saturday against
No. 14 MIT and No. 10 Baruch College. Elms will face MIT at 10:00
a.m. and Baruch at 12:00 p.m.
