Men’s Volleyball Sweeps By Southern Vermont, 3-0

BENNINGTON, V.T. – Elms College sophomore outside hitter Yonalvy Acosta (Holyoke, Mass.) smashed a match-high 19 kills to propel the Blazers to a 3-0 (30-22, 30-24, 30-22) sweep of Southern Vermont College in Saturday evening’s North East Collegiate Volleyball Association (NECVA) New England Division and New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) men’s volleyball match.

With the win, Elms improves to 3-7 overall, 3-3 NECVA, 2-1 NECC, while Southern Vermont slips to 1-6 overall, 1-5 NECVA, 0-3 NECC.

Acosta paced the Blazers offense, hitting at a sizzling .500 clip (19K, 2E, 34TA) for the match, helping Elms to a team hitting percentage of .257 (47K, 18E, 113TA).

Sophomore setter Mike Martin (Enfield, Conn.) directed a well-balanced offensive attack, handing out 38 assists. Freshman middle hitter Wilfrido Fermin (Bronx, N.Y.) downed nine kills, while freshman outside hitter Stephen Cameron (Newington, Conn.) blasted eight in the wining effort.

Junior libero Mike Ryan (Ludlow, Mass.) and sophomore opposite hitter Mike Kleckner (Bethlehem, Pa.) led the Blazers’ defense, recording 19 and 12 digs respectively.

Acosta and sophomore middle hitter Aaron Coifman (Caracas, Venezuela ) each registered a solo block and three assisted blocks in Elms’ victory over the Mountaineers.

Southern Vermont was led by Matt Schwab (Lambertville, N.J.) who downed a team-high six kills, while Sean Moore (Upper Marlboro, Md.) and Jullian Amaral (New Bedford, Mass.) added five each.

Moore contributed four solo stuffs, while Schwab collected eight digs in the losing effort.

Elms returns to NECVA and NECC action on Wednesday, Feb. 10 when it travels to Lesley University. First-serve is set for 8:00 p.m.
