BROOKLINE, Mass. – Elms College junior setter Mike Ryan (Ludlow, Mass.) dished out a match-high 23 assists, but Newbury College received a match-best 19-kill output from Mark Thomas (Wilbraham, Mass.) to help lift the Nighthawks to a 3-0 (23-30, 21-30, 21-30) victory over the Blazers in Thursday evening’s North East Collegiate Volleyball Association (NECVA) New England Division and New England Collegiate Conference men’s volleyball contest at Hellenic College.

With the loss, Elms falls to 4-19 overall, 4-8 NECVA, 3-5 NECC, while Newbury improves to17-9 overall, 9-1 NECVA, 7-0 NECC.

Elms opened up an early 7-1 lead in the first set, but Newbury rallied behind Thomas’ 11 kills in the frame to set the tone for the Nighthawks who finished the contest hitting at a .356 clip while holding the Blazers to just a .054 hitting percentage for the match.

Elms’ sophomore opposite hitter Mike Kleckner (Bethlehem, Pa.) led the squad with nine kills, while sophomore outside hitter Yonalvy Acosta (Holyoke, Mass.) followed with eight kills.

Freshman middle hitter Wilfrido Fermin (Bronx, N.Y.) and Acosta each assisted on a pair of blocks, while Fermin added five kills. Freshman outside hitter Stephen Cameron (Newington, Conn.) added a match-high nine digs in the losing effort for the Blazers.

Newbury’s Danny Kim (Plainview, N.Y.) and Josh Aberly (Palatine, Ill.) downed nine and eight kills respectively while Matt Talamantes (Los Angeles, Calif.) and Sean Copher (Northlake, Ill.) handed out 21 and 19 helpers respectively to highlight the win for the Nighthawks.

Elms returns to action on Saturday, March 20 when it hosts MIT and Mount Ida College in a tri-match. The Blazers will square off against MIT in a NECVA New England matchup at 12:00 p.m. and will then take on Mount Ida in a non-league showdown at 4:00 p.m.
