BROOKLINE, Mass. –Fourth-seeded Elms College sophomore outside hitter Yonalvy Acosta (Holyoke, Mass.) downed a team-high six kills, but No. 1 Newbury College’s Mark Thomas (Wilbraham, Mass.) smashed a match-best 13 kills to lift the Nighthawks to a 3-0 (30-22, 30-24, 30-11) sweep of the Blazers in Saturday afternoon’s New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) semifinal contest at Hellenic College.

With the loss, Elms falls to 5-23 overall, while Newbury improves to 20-10 and advances to the NECC championship contest.

Newbury’s James Beck (Havre De Grace, Md.) paced the Nighthawks’ attack, handing out a match-high 19 assists, while Sean Copher (Northlake, Ill.) distributed seven helpers in the winning effort.

Thomas hit at a phenomenal .524 clip, while Max Daley (Cranston, R.I.) finished with six kills on nine swings (.667 hitting percentage).

Sophomore setter Mike Martin (Enfield, Conn.) notched 11 assists for the Blazers, while freshman outside hitter Stephen Cameron (Newington, Conn.) finished in a tie for the match high in digs with 10.

Sophomore opposite hitter Mike Kleckner (Bethlehem, Pa.) and freshman middle hitter Wilfrido Fermin (Bronx, N.Y.) downed four kills each for Elms in the losing effort.

Elms returns to North East Collegiate Volleyball Association (NECVA) New England Division action on Thursday, April 1 when it travels to Endicott College for a 4:00 p.m. contest.
