Field Hockey Downs Bay Path College, 2-1

Field Hockey Downs Bay Path College, 2-1

LONGMEADOW, Mass. – Elms College sophomore forward Tatiana Frizzell (Brattleboro, Vt.) scored what proved to be the game-winner in the 14th minute of play as the Blazers topped Bay Path College, 2-1 in a tightly contested New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) field hockey game at Ryan Field in Longmeadow, Mass. on Tuesday afternoon.

With the win, Elms improves to 4-8 on the season and remains unbeaten in conference play at 2-0. Bay Path falls to 0-8 on the season, 0-2 in league action.

Elms got off to a fast start as junior forward Kayla Narey (South Hadley, Mass.) scored an unassisted goal in the ninth minute of play to give the Blazers a 1-0 edge.

Five minutes later, Frizzell corralled a pass from junior defender Julie Hurley (Palmer, Mass.) and found the back of the cage to give Elms a 2-0 lead.

Bay Path cut its deficit in half in the 21st minute when Elizabeth Barclay (Auburn, Maine) controlled a centering pass down the middle of the field by Ruth Choate (Lewiston, Maine) and finished with a scoring strike to set the score at 2-1.

Bay Path held advantages in shots (7-5) and penalty corners (6-2) in the first half, but the Blazers carried a 2-1 lead into intermission.

In the second stanza, both sides earned a pair of penalty corners, but neither team got into much of an offensive groove as Elms accounted for the lone shot in the second frame to help the Blazers secure the 2-1 victory.

Elms' senior goalkeeper Alexandra Bonavita (Agawam, Mass.) and Bay Path's net-minder Anna Meyer (Millbrook, N.Y.) made three saves each during the contest.

Elms is back to non-conference action on Thursday, Oct. 11 when it hosts Framingham State University at 4:00 p.m. at Leary Field.
