Field Hockey Falls at Smith College, 11-2

CHICOPEE, Mass. – Elms College junior defender Julie Hurley (Palmer, Mass.) scored her first goal of the season and freshman forward Kristina Kopyscinski (Agawam, Mass.) scored on a penalty stroke, but Allie Stein (Ann Arbor, Mich.) scored five goals and Smith College netted nine unanswered goals following a 2-2 tie to help lift the Pioneers to an 11-2 victory over the Blazers in Tuesday afternoon's non-conference field hockey game in Northampton, Mass.

With the loss, Elms falls to 1-3 overall, while Smith improves to 2-2 on the season.

Hurley got the scoring started early in the first period when she beat Smith goalkeeper Abbey Fleming (Beverly, Mass.) in the fifth minute of action to give Elms a 1-0 lead.

Stein answered with the first of her five strikes nearly three minutes later, evening the contest at 1-1 before Alexa DeJesus (Somerset, Mass.) put Smith ahead 2-1 with her first goal of the contest.  

Elms was then awarded a penalty stroke at the 11:18 mark which Kopyscinski fired into the back of the cage sending the game to a 2-2 deadlock.

Stein then struck for the second time which started a string of nine unanswered goals for the Pioneers as Stein added one more before intermission, while Caroline Noonan (Guilford, Conn.) collected three consecutive goals in a five minute span to give Smith a 7-2 cushion at halftime.

Following the break, Sydney Burns (Woodbury, N.J.) tallied a score, Stein added two more, and DeJesus added her second to give the Pioneers an 11-2 victory.

Stein finished with five goals and three assists on the afternoon and DeJesus added two scoring strikes and four assists to lead Smith in the win.

Elms' senior goalkeeper Alexandra Bonavita (Agawam, Mass.) turned away four shots in 34:05 minutes of action, while freshman net-minder Samantha Alvino (Holtsville, N.Y.) made five saves in the final 35:55.

Elms returns to non-conference play on Saturday, September 15 when it hosts Colby-Sawyer College at 2:00 p.m. at Leary Field.
