Field Hockey Falls to Vassar College, 6-0

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Elms College senior goalkeeper Alexandra Bonavita (Agawam, Mass.) made three saves and sophomore defender Ashley Reid (Enfield, Conn.) added two shots, but Vassar College scored five first half goals including two goals and an assist from Anna Schroeder (Saratoga, Calif.) to help pace the Brewers to a 6-0 win over the Blazers in Wednesday evening's non-conference field hockey game.

With the loss, Elms falls to 2-8 overall, while Vassar improves to 6-4 on the season.

Vassar opened scoring in the ninth minute when Schroeder played a hard pass past the defense to Elizabeth Raskopf (North Salem, N.Y.), who tipped the ball into the back of the net.

Schroeder added a goal of her own in the 16th minute, when she made a strong run into the penalty area and sent a hard shot from eight yards out into the right side of the net.

The Brewers added a third goal to their tally in the 24th minute, when Hayley Merritt (Northport, N.Y.) sent a pass across the area to Schroeder, who hit a hard low shot into the back right side of the net.

Vassar's next two goals both came in the 30th minute. Lauren Wiebe (Chicago, Ill.) tapped the first one in when Bianca Zarrella's (Leominster, Mass.) shot was deflected skywards. The second came when Rebecca Smith (Woodland Hills, Calif.) drove into the penalty area and hooked the ball into the left side of the goal to put the Brewers up 5-0 at halftime.

Vassar continued the scoring run into the second half, and struck again in the 48th minute when Cameron Felt (La Jolla, Calif.) received a cross from Smith and hit a low shot into the back right side of the net to put the Brewers up 6-0.

Elms returns to action on Saturday, October 6 when it hosts Wheelock College at 1:00 p.m. at Leary Field in its New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) opener.
