CHICOPEE, MA – Elms College freshman goalie Alexandra Bonavita (Agawam, MA) turned away 30 shots, but Phoebe Hopkins (Philadelphia, PA) netted three goals and assisted on another to help propel Smith College to a convincing 11-0 win over the Blazers in Thursday afternoon’s non-conference field hockey game at Leary Field.

With the loss, Elms moves to 1-3 on the season, while Smith earns its first victory of the season to improve to 1-2 overall.

The Pioneers raced out to an early lead, scoring three times in the first 14 minutes. Hopkins tallied two of her three goals in the first period while Emily Howe (Harwinton, CT) and Natalie Wickles (Hatfield, MA) added a goal each.

Smith pulled away in the second half, scoring seven times. Howe scored her second goal of the contest on a feed from Hopkins in the 42nd minute of play before Hopkins notched her third goal of the day just three minutes later.

Nomindari Goulden (Rutledge, PA) came off the bench and found the back of the net twice, while, Kaitlyn Murdough (Harrisville, NH), Anika Goodhue (Bennington, VT) and Mary Kate Long (Boylston, MA) also added second half goals. Murdough’s goal came off a penalty shot at the 37:46 mark and sparked the Pioneer’s second frame offensive outburst.

The Blazers registered just one shot on the afternoon, as senior forward Tomie Lafond (Hatfield, MA) fired the ball at Smith net-minder Margaret Winter (Purchase, NY) in the first half.

The Pioneers totaled 49 shots in the contest and won the penalty corner battle 20-1.

Elms College opens New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) action with an 11:00 a.m. showdown at Becker on Sept. 19.
