Field Hockey Falls To Becker, 7-0
CHICOPEE, MA – Elms College freshman
net-minder Alexandra Bonavita (Agawam, MA) batted
away 11 shots, but Becker College's Kayla Messina
(Somerville, MA) scored three goals to help pace the Hawks
to a 7-0 victory over the Blazers in Saturday morning’s New
England Collegiate Conference (NECC) field hockey game during
Homecoming Weekend.
With the loss, Elms falls to 3-10 on the season, 2-4 in league
action, while Becker improves to 10-7 overall and remains unbeaten
in the NECC.
Becker took a 1-0 lead 14 minutes into the opening period when
Morgan Gass (Avon, CT) buried the ball in the
right corner of the net following a sharp cross through the middle
from Brooke Cote (Fitchburg, MA). The duo then
struck again at the 19:29 mark, this time with Cote scoring off a
feed from Gass, giving the Hawks a 2-0 lead.
Messina then tallied two of her three scores, ripping a shot to
the left corner of the net at the 28:48 mark, before striking again
1:11 later, extending the advantage to 4-0. Cote then scored in the
32nd minute of play to give Becker a commanding 5-0 lead.
Following the intermission, Gass collected her second goal of the
contest on a pass from Jennifer Ouellette (Merrimack,
NH) at 39:31 mark. Messina then closed out the scoring for
the game when she fired a clean shot into the goal 46 minutes into
the game to give Becker a 7-0 cushion.
The Hawks have now won six consecutive games and nine of their
last 11.
Victoria Sirchia (Goshen, CT) led the Hawks with
nine shots, while Cote and Gass finished with four apiece in the
win.
Elms was led by senior forward Tomie Lafond (Hatfield,
MA) who registered five shots in the losing effort.
Elms returns to NECC action Wednesday, Oct. 21 against Wheelock.
Game time is slated for 4:00 p.m. at Leary Field.
