SPRINGFIELD, MA – Elms College freshman
net-minder Alexandra Bonavita (Agawam, MA)
defended 12 shots, but three Western New England College (WNEC)
players scored two goals each to help pace the Golden Bears to a
convincing 9-0 victory over the Blazers in Wednesday
evening’s non-conference field hockey game at Golden Bear
Stadium.
With the loss, Elms concludes its regular season 3-13 overall.
With the win, WNEC improves to 5-14 on the season.
WNEC set the tone early, scoring three goals in the first five
minutes, one apiece from Amy Hedberg (Guilford,
CT), Kaela Jalbert (Turner, ME) and
Shelby Van Huysen (Killingworth, CT).
Aimee O’Connell (Rome, NY) then netted
back-to-back scores to give the Golden Bears a 5-0 lead at the
24:52 mark. Hedberg then struck for her second goal of the contest
and Maria McQueeny (Dover, MA) added a goal just
before the intermission to give WNEC a 7-0 cushion.
In the second period, Caitlin Foster (Hyde Park,
NY) scored on a feed from Rebecca Squires
(Merrimack, NH) in the 48th minute of the contest before
Jalbert capped the scoring when she controlled a pass from
O’Connell and scored her second goal of the game.
Hedberg, Jalbert and O’Connell each tallied two scores,
while O’Connell added an assist to lead the Golden Bears.
Foster added a goal and an assist in the winning effort.
