Men’s Golf in Third Place Following Day One of NECC Championship

LITCHFIELD, N.H. – Elms College senior golfer Phil Rurak (Wilbraham, Mass.) carded a two-over-par 73 and finished in a three-way tie for first place individually and the Blazers registered a team score of 310 to place third overall during day one action of the 2012 New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) Championship hosted by Daniel Webster College at Passaconoway Country Club in Litchfield, N.H.

Babson College and Springfield College are currently in a two-way tie for first place with scores of 308, while Elms is sitting two strokes behind in third place with an overall mark of 310. Newbury College is fourth with an overall first round of 335, followed by Becker College (343), Daniel Webster (356) and Mitchell College (384).

Babson's Vijay Vasandani and Springfield's Adam Ziewancz joined Rurak in shooting a 73 during Saturday's first round, while Blazers' junior Henry Fall (Harpswell, Maine) finished two strokes behind with a score of 75.

The Beavers and Pride tied for fifth place as Wesley Tryhane and Tom Vollaro each shot a 76 for Babson and Springfield respectively.

Elms' sophomore Nick Smith (Enfield, Conn.) tallied a 39 on the front nine and a 38 on the back nine to score a 77 and finish in seventh place overall, while junior Tyler Cudnik (Hampden, Mass.) tallied an 85 and  freshman Lana O'Connor (East Longmeadow, Mass.) added an 87 to round out the Blazers' lineup.

Day two action is set for Sunday at Passaconoway Country Club at 10:00 a.m.
