Men’s Golf Places Second at NECC Championship

BROCKTON, Mass. – Elms College sophomore Henry Fall (Harpswell, Maine) shot an even-par 70 and freshman Nicholas Smith (Enfield, Conn.) shot a 78 to earn rookie of the year honors following Sunday afternoon's round two action at the 2011 New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) men's golf championship hosted by Babson College at DW Field Golf Course.

Babson's Joe Young (Westwood, Mass.) outdueled teammate Wesley Tryhane (Stamford, Conn.) in a two-hole playoff to earn NECC Golfer of the Year honors as the duo helped the Beavers claim the 2011 New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) championship with a score of 592. With its second NECC title in three years, Babson also secured the league's first-ever automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament.

Elms shot a 310 on day two (608 overall) led by Fall's 70 and Smith's 78, while junior Philip Rurak (Wilbraham, Mass.) carded an 80 on day two. Sophomores Tyler Cudnik (Hampden, Mass.) and Kyle Simard (Thorndike, Mass.) each registered a score of 82.

Smith notched a collegiate career-best round of 72 in day one action of the NECC Championship and his 78 on day two gave him a two-round total of 150 en route to earning conference rookie of the year honors. He was also named First Team All-NECC along with Fall who finished with a combined score of 146 (76+70), while Rurak was named Second Team All-NECC with a total score of 155 (75+80).

Springfield College finished third overall (619), followed by Becker Colelge (656), Newbury College (670), Daniel Webster College (684) and Mitchell College (no team score) to round out the seven-team field.

Elms concludes the 2011 fall portion of its season on Wednesday, Oct. 12 at the Emmanuel College Invitational.
