Men’s Golf Finishes Second in Day One Action at NECC Championship

BROCKTON, Mass.— Elms College freshman Nicholas Smith (Enfield, Conn.) carded a collegiate career-best round of 72 and all four scoring Blazers finished in the top eight individually to help the squad to a program-best score of 298 and a second place standing after day one action of the 2011 New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) men's golf championship hosted by Babson College at DW Field Golf Course.

Babson's Joe Young (Westwood, Mass.) shot a one-under-par 69 to take a two-shot lead after round one action and teammate Wesley Tryhane (Stamford, Conn.) finished two strokes behind (71) to finish second overall and help the Beavers to a season-best score of 289 and the team lead after 18 holes.

Elms, the defending NECC Champions, used a balanced effort, placing four golfers in the top eight. Smith led the Blazers' with a third place finish overall, while junior Philip Rurak (Wilbraham, Mass.) and sophomore Kyle Simard (Thorndike, Mass.) both stand at five-over par (75) and tied for sixth-place. Sophomore Henry Fall (Harpswell, Maine) carded a six-over par 76 for the Blazers, and is tied for eighth place.

Springfield College is currently in third place with a team score of 304, while Becker College (337), Newbury College (338), Daniel Webster College (350) and Mitchell College (no team score) round out the seven-team field. 

The final round will commence tomorrow morning at 11:30 a.m. with golfers going out in foursomes from the first tee. The winner of the 2011 championship will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The site of the 2012 Division III NCAA Tournament has yet to be determined.
