A New Beginning For Men’s Golf In 2009

CHICOPEE, MA – A new head coach, a new point of emphasis, a new beginning in 2009.

First-year head coach Craig Cowles has implemented a new focus, one of “spirit, mind and body” for his golf squad that features a junior and three freshmen.

Through team workouts, team building exercises and visualization and relaxation techniques, the Blazers will be hitting all three facets of the “spirit, mind and body” concept.

This new philosophy has already paid dividends

“The players like each other,” Coach Cowles stated. “That is going to allow them to take the good with the bad and the bad with the good as a team, and that is very important for us this season.”

This emphasis on building the program through the “spirit, mind, and body” philosophy does not stop on the course.

“I want this group to feel and look like a team,” Coach Cowles explained. “They are proud to be a part of this program and I think they will represent it well both on and off the course, which will also help with recruiting.”

The Blazers return just one golfer this year, junior Andrew Sullivan (West Springfield, MA), but his impact has already been felt.

“Andrew is our captain and our leader,” Coach Cowles said. “He has and will continue to take his teammates under his wing and will work to keep them calm on the golf course and to create a team atmosphere.”

Heading into the 2009 campaign, the strength of the Blazers will be in length, while course management due to general unfamiliarity with certain courses will be a weakness for the squad this season.

“As a team, I’d like our average score to be around 340,” Coach Cowles noted. “Andrew is also capable of winning an individual title as well.”

Joining Sullivan will be freshmen Daniel Costello (Brookfield, CT) and Kyle Panek (Belchertown, MA).

“We have a good group of players that will play as a team, and our goal is that a team concept will result in building depth for our program heading into the spring season.”

SCHEDULE

The Blazers play both a fall and spring season. They practice and play all home matches at nearby Chicopee Country Club, a 6,742-yard, par-71 course, which is recognized as one of the premier municipal courses in Massachusetts.

As members of the NCAA, ECAC, and NECC, the golf team competes against many of the region's best Division III programs each season.

Elms will host the first of two Blazers Invitationals on Tuesday, Sept. 15 at Chicopee Country Club to kick off the 2009 season.

WRAP-UP

For men’s golf, a new age has begun under Coach Cowles. With the embrace of the “spirit, mind and body” philosophy, and an emphasis on teamwork, dedication and leadership, the Blazers will take the course this fall with a newfound confidence and determination.
