Women’s Volleyball Falls to Newbury College, 3-0

BROOKLINE, Mass. – Elms College senior outside hitter Stacy Croteau (Agawam, Mass.) and junior outside hitter Christina Martin (Chicopee, Mass.) each drilled a team-high seven kills, but Newbury College's Sydney Fish (Kalamazoo, Mich.) paced the Nighthawks with a match-best 12 kills to seal a 3-0 (25-22, 25-17, 25-22) sweep of the Blazers in Wednesday evening's New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) women's volleyball match at Hellenic College in Brookline, Mass.

With the loss, Elms slips to 9-16 on the season, 2-5 in NECC action, while Newbury improves to 14-16 overall, 6-1 in conference play.

In the opening set the sides played to six ties and a lead change before the Nighthawks posted a 24-22 lead and capped the set with a service ace by Fish.

The second frame saw Newbury stake a 22-17 lead before a pair of Fish kills and a service ace by Sara Hanna (Center Moriches, N.Y.) allowed the Nighthawks to claim a two-set advantage in the match.

In a hard-fought third stanza, Elms took a 19-18 lead on a kill by Croteau before a service error knotted the set at 19-19. After the sides exchanged points to set the score at 20-20, Newbury scored four of the next six points to setup match point and sealed the win on a Blazers' service error.

Elms' senior setter Jennifer Rego (Fall River, Mass.) directed the Blazers' efforts with an 18-assist, eight-dig, six-service ace effort. Croteau added five service aces and eight digs, tying with Rego for the team high in the category.

Regina Sibilia (Agawam, Mass.) paced the Nighthawks with 16 assists, while Tricia Corriveau (Coventry, R.I.) and Lauren Watson (Denver, Colo.) finished with five kills each behind Fish's 12.

Corriveau chipped in six aces and registered a match-high 17 digs to help seal the win for Newbury.

Elms concludes regular season action on Saturday, Oct. 29 when it hosts Bay Path College in an NECC tilt. First-serve is set for 2:00 p.m. at Picknelly Arena.
