Women’s Volleyball Downs Becker College, Albertus Magnus College in Tri-Match Action

CHICOPEE, Mass. – Elms College junior outside hitter Christina Martin (Chicopee, Mass.) registered a match-high in kills in both contests to help lift the Blazers to 3-0 (26-24, 25-23, 25-18) win over Becker College and a 3-2 (19-25, 17-25, 25-22, 25-22, 15-10) victory over Albertus Magnus College in Saturday afternoon's women's volleyball tri-match action at Picknelly Arena.

With its two wins, Elms improves to 8-12 on the season, 1-2 in New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) play, while Becker (3-15 overall, 0-3 NECC) suffered a 3-0 (25-18, 25-16, 25-17) loss to Albertus Magnus (2-13 overall).

Elms 3, Becker 0

Martin led the Blazers' offensive efforts against Becker, downing a match-best 11 kills, while senior outside hitter Stacy Croteau (Agawam, Mass.) and sophomore opposite hitter Rachel Cowan (Ellington, Conn.) added eight kills each in the winning effort.

Senior setter Jennifer Rego (Fall River, Mass.) paced the attack with 27 assists, five service aces and 11 digs, while Martin also notched 11 digs.

Becker received a team-high eight kills from Nicole Morse (Alton, N.H.), while Lauren LaVallee (Millbury, Mass.) handed out 11 assists.  

Albertus Magnus 3, Becker 0

In the second match, Albertus Magnus' Melissa Manning (Milford, Conn.) blasted a match-best 11 kills and setter Leanna Velez (Waterbury, Conn.) distributed 21 assists to help pace the Falcons to a sweep for the team's second win of the season.

Krista LaBissioniere (Meriden, Conn.) added a match-high 20 digs, while Nicole Acerra (East Haven, Conn.) added 14 digs to help spark the win.

Morse registered five kills against the Falcons, while LaVallee managed nine assists in the losing effort for the Hawks.

Elms 3, Albertus Magnus 2

Albertus Magnus stormed out to a 2-0 lead in the match before Elms rallied winning the next three sets to earn a hard-fought victory.

Martin paced the Blazers' come-from-behind efforts with a match-high 18 kills, while Croteau notched a match-high 23 digs and added nine kills.

Cowan was stellar at the net with 12 kills of her own, while Martin finished with 19 digs.

Rego directed the charge with 39 assists and 12 digs, while freshman libero Caitlyn Larvey (Greenfield, Mass.) finished with 15 digs in the contest.

The Falcons received a solid effort from Elizabeth Williams (West Haven, Conn.) who totaled 13 kill in the loss, while Angel Cox (New Haven, Conn.) contributed nine kills.

Velez passed out 20 helpers and added 10 digs, while LaBissioniere finished with a team-high 20 digs in the losing effort. Cox, Acerra and Soltear Dy (Torrington, Conn.) chipped in 13, 12 and 10 digs respectively.

Elms returns to action on Tuesday, Oct. 11 when it travels to Southern Vermont College for a NECC match beginning at 7:00 p.m. in Bennington, Vt.
