Women’s Volleyball Earns Split with Mount Holyoke College, Castleton State College

CHICOPEE, Mass. –
Elms College senior setter Jennifer Rego (Fall River, Mass.) dished out a combined 60 assists and senior outside hitter Stacy Croteau (Agawam, Mass.) smashed 20 kills against Castleton State College to help pace the Blazers to a split with Mount Holyoke College and the Spartans in Saturday afternoon's non-conference women's volleyball tri-match at Picknelly Arena.

Mount Holyoke (5-3 overall) earned a 3-0 (25-22, 25-14, 25-10) victory over Elms and a 3-0 (25-17, 25-8, 25-20) win over Castleton State (0-9 overall). The Blazers concluded tri-match action with a 3-2 (21-25, 25-21, 21-25, 25-23, 15-10) victory over the Spartans to improves to 5-8 overall.

Mount Holyoke 3, Elms 0

Kaleen Iwema (Wadsworth, Ill.) paced the Lyons to a sweep of Elms, downing 10 kills and notching three assisted blocks, while Alison Chu (Old Tappan, N.J.) finished with six kills and four digs.

Mollyanne Fitzpatrick (Round Rock, Texas) dished 10 of the team's 25 assists, while Samantha Rosado (Meriden, Conn.) was a force on defense totaling a match-best 11 digs in the winning effort.

Martina Kneifel (Oro Valley, Ariz.) added five of Mount Holyoke's 13 service aces, while Kathryn Brummer (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) added four assisted blocks and a solo.

Croteau and junior outside hitter Christina Martin (Chicopee, Mass.) finished with eight kills each in the loss, while Rego distributed 15 assists and added seven digs.

Freshman libero Caitlyn Larvey (Greenfield, Mass.) registered a team-best nine digs.

Mount Holyoke 3, Castleton State 0

In Mount Holyoke's win Kneifel floored 11 kills and two solo blocks and Fitzpatrick amassed 10 assists and 10 digs to seal the win. Brummer added two solo blocks in the contest.

Castleton State was led by a two-kill effort from Nicole Valastro (South Glens Falls, N.Y.), Alyssa Sherman (Argyle, N.Y.), Sarah Wheeler (Kinderhook, N.Y.) and Grace Schreiber (Cheshire, Conn.).

Paige Lacey (Westerly, R.I.) handed out six assists.

Elms 3, Castleton State 2

Castleton State posted an early 1-0 lead in the contest and the sides alternated wins in each set, forcing a deciding fifth frame with neither set being determined by more than five points.

Croteau blasted 20 kills and registered 16 digs, while Rego passed out 45 assists and contributed 13 digs to guide Elms to victory.

Martin added 12 kills, served up six aces and tied for the match-high in digs with 19, while Larvey finished with 15 digs in the win.

Wheeler and Schreiber combined for 18 of the Spartans' 34 kills, while Alyssa Sherman (Argyle, N.Y.) registered 19 digs. Valastro, Wheeler and Schreiber added 11 digs each, while Lacey finished with 10 in the loss.

Elms returns to non-conference action on Monday, Sept. 26 at Pine Manor College at 7:00 p.m.
