Women’s Volleyball Sweeps by SUNY Cobleskill, 3-0

CHICOPEE, Mass. – Elms College junior outside hitter Christina Martin (Chicopee, Mass.) blasted a match-best 15 kills and notched a team-high 13 digs to help lift the Blazers to a 3-0 (25-15, 25-23, 25-21) sweep of SUNY Cobleskill in day two action of the 2011 Blazers Challenge on Saturday afternoon at Picknelly Arena.

With the win, Elms improves to 2-1 on the season while SUNY Cobleskill falls to 1-2 overall.  Elms returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 10 when it travels to Smith College for a tri-match with the Pioneers and Curry College beginning at 1:00 p.m.

In the day's first match, Husson University swept Massachusetts Maritime Academy 3-0 (25-9, 25-6, 25-3) and concludes Blazers Challenge actions 3-0 overall. The Buccaneers fall to 0-3 to start their season.

Elms 3, SUNY Cobleskill 0

Martin paced the Blazers' attack flooring 15 kills on 29 swings with just two misfires to register a .448 hitting percentage, while senior outside hitter Stacy Croteau (Agawam, Mass.) and sophomore opposite hitter Rachel Cowan (Ellington, Conn.) contributed five kills each.

Senior setter Jennifer Rego (Fall River, Mass.) dished out a match-high 25 assists and was one of three Elms players to record seven digs. Senior defensive specialist Anne Blanchette (Byfield, Mass.) and freshman libero Caitlyn Larvey (Greenfield, Mass.) added seven each, while Croteau finished with nine digs in the winning effort.

SUNY Cobleskill was led by Brooke Burke's (Lansing, N.Y.) six kills, while Elizabeth Stap (Pine Bush, N.Y.) and Kady Porterfield (Macdoel, Calif.) downed four apiece. Porterfield also dug a match-high 15 balls in the loss.

Husson 3, Mass. Maritime 0

Husson's Hannah Olstad (Farmington, N.H.) ignited the Eagles' offensive attack smashing nine kills on 16 swings with three errors to hit at a .375 clip. Setter Aleta Johnson (Milton, N.H.) added 21 assists and served up a sensational nine service aces as Husson delivered 24 in the contest.

Mass. Maritime was sparked by Ashley Button's (Southfield, Mass.) four digs, while Alex Burgess-Chrost (Leominster, Mass.), Michaela Garrity (Tiverton, R.I.) and Laura Basile (Cambridge, Mass.) added three digs each in the loss.
