Mitchell College Sweeps Womens’ Volleyball, 3-0

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Elms College sophomore outside hitter Christina Martin (Chicopee, Mass.) totaled a team-high eight kills, but Mitchell College received an 11-kill effort from Stephanie McKeon (Ledyard, Conn.) to help pace the Mariners to a hard-fought 3-0 (25-22, 25-23, 25-19) sweep of the Blazers in Saturday afternoon's New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) women's volleyball match at the Yarnall Center in New London, Conn.

With the loss, Elms falls to 6-17 overall, 2-3 in league action, while Mitchell improves to 5-14 on the season, 1-4 in NECC play.

Freshman setter Ashley Fuller (Amherst, Mass.) directed the Elms offense with 15 assists while junior outside hitter Jenn Rego (Fall River, Mass.) dished out eight helpers.

Senior middle hitter Laura Kulig (Holyoke, Mass.) downed seven kills on 13 swings with just two errors to register a .385 hitting percentage, while Rego, junior outside hitter Stacy Croteau (Agawam, Mass.) and senior middle hitter Melissa Clark (Chicopee, Mass.) downed five kills each in the losing effort.

Clark also recorded a team-best 10 digs while Rego served up a pair of aces.

Mitchell's Akesia Bernard (Hartford, Conn.) smashed seven kills and Samantha Alevras-Tarbell (Livingston, N.J.) added 11 digs to spark the win for the Mariners.

Jennifer Bordonaro (Winsted, Conn.) guided Mitchell's offense with 17 assists while Brittany Zaccaria (White Plains, N.Y.) complemented the attack with five service aces.

Elms returns to non-conference action on Tuesday, Oct. 26 when it hosts Pine Manor College. First serve is slated for 7:00 p.m. at Picknelly Arena.
