Women’s Volleyball Falls To Husson, SUNY Cobleskill In Day One Action Of 2010 Blazer Challenge

CHICOPEE, Mass. – Elms College junior outside hitter Stacy Croteau (Agawam, Mass.) smashed a total of 16 kills through two matches, but the Blazers fell 3-0 (21-25, 17-25, 15-25) to Husson University and 3-0 (21-25, 14-25, 16-25) to SUNY Cobleskill in day one action of the 2010 Blazer Challenge on Friday, Sept. 3 at Picknelly Arena.

With the losses, Elms falls to 0-2 on the season.

Husson downed Massachusetts Maritime Academy 3-0 (25-13, 25-5, 25-12) to earn its second victory on the day and improve to 2-0 on the season.

SUNY Cobleskill swept Mass. Maritime 3-0 (25-9, 25-17, 25-5) to notch its second win of the day and now move to 3-0 overall.

Mass. Maritime lost both its matches and they fall to 0-3 on the season.

Husson 3, Elms 0

Croteau and senior middle hitter Melissa Clark (Chicopee, Mass.) notched six kills each to pace the Blazers' offense while sophomore outside hitter Christina Martin (Chicopee, Mass.) downed four in the losing effort.

Husson received a match-high nine kills from Kaitlyn McKay (Lincoln, R.I.), while Michelle Smith (New Boston, N.H.) smashed eight kills to spark the Eagles' attack. Aleta Johnson (Milton, N.H.) dished out a match-best 32 assists for Husson in the winning effort, while McKay and Rachel Voicechovski (Jefferson, N.J.) combined for 17 digs.

For the Blazers, freshman setter Ashley Fuller (Amherst, Mass.) notched 10 assists, while Clark tallied two solo blocks and assisted on three others.

SUNY Cobleskill 3, Elms 0

Maggie Trombly (Chateaugay, N.Y.) paced SUNY Cobleskill to victory with a tie for the match-high in kills with 10. Elizabeth Stap (Pine Brush, N.Y.) added seven kills and Krista Grady (Schenectady, N.Y.) struck for 24 helpers to ignite the victory.

Croteau downed 10 balls and collected 12 digs for Elms, while junior setter/outside hitter Jenn Rego (Fall River, Mass.) directed the attack with 21 assists and amassed 10 digs. Junior libero Anne Blanchette (Byfield, Mass.) added 11 digs in the losing effort for the Blazers.

Trombly and Nancy Stephens (Warnerville, N.Y.) totaled 14 digs each for the Fighting Tigers in the victory.

Blazer Challenge action resumes on Saturday, Sept. 4 when SUNY Cobleskill squares off against Husson at 11:00 a.m. and Elms takes on Mass. Maritime at 1:00 p.m. Click here to follow both matches on live stats.
