Women’s Volleyball Splits With Becker And Mount Ida

CHICOPEE, Mass. – The Elms College women's volleyball team earned a split in Saturday afternoon's tri-match at Picknelly Arena, picking up a 3-0 (25-15, 25-18, 25-18) New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) sweep against Becker College before falling to Mount Ida College in a non-conference contest 3-0 (25-10, 25-14, 26-24).

With the split, Elms moves to 4-13 overall, 1-0 in league action. Mount Ida won both its contests and improves to 11-5 on the season, while Becker lost both of theirs to fall to 4-10 overall, 0-1 in the NECC.

In Elms' NECC opener against Becker, junior outside hitter Stacy Croteau (Agawam, Mass.) blasted a team-high 11 kills and added 10 digs, while junior outside hitter Jenn Rego (Fall River, Mass.) dug a team-best 13 balls and served up three aces to preserve the sweep of the Hawks.

The Blazers' freshman setter Ashley Fuller (Amherst, Mass.) paced the offense with 28 assists and added a pair of service aces, while senior middle hitter Melissa Clark (Chicopee, Mass.) notched seven kills and assisted on a pair of blocks.

Becker was led by Catherine Vacca (Marlborough, Mass.) and Nicole Morse (Alton, N.H.) who delivered a team-high five kills each, while Caitlin DiLorenzo (Seekonk, Mass.) contributed with a match-best 14 digs.

The Hawks also received a 10-dig effort from Julie Trcka (Shelton, Conn.) and 12 assists from setter Keslea Laubenstein (Randolph, Mass.).

In Elms' contest against Mount Ida, the Mustangs built a two-set lead in the match before Elms rallied in the third set and maintained a narrow lead for the majority of the frame. Tied 23-23, the Blazers took the lead on a Mount Ida miscue before a Blazers' attacking error and back-to-back kills from Jennifer Ferreira (Shirley, Mass.) sealed the victory for the Mustangs.

Ferreira finished with a team-high 16 kills while Chelsea Darnell (Dublin, Ohio) followed with 15. Darnell also added a match-high 14 digs in the win.

The Mustangs hit .362 for the match led by 22 assists from Kira Feeter (Keene, N.H.) and 21 helpers from Cody Fusco (San Francisco, Calif.). Fusco also tallied 12 digs.

Croteau and senior middle hitter Laura Kulig (Holyoke, Mass.) downed six kills each, while Fuller handed out 16 assists and collected 10 digs in the loss.

Elms returns to non-conference action on Thursday, Oct. 7 when it travels to St. Joseph College (Conn.) for a 7:00 p.m. contest.
