Women’s Volleyball Falls To Smith, Colby-Sawyer

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – Elms College senior middle hitter Melissa Clark (Chicopee, Mass.) totaled nine kills on the day and freshman setter Ashley Fuller (Amherst, Mass.) distributed a combined 24 assists, but the Blazers were swept 3-0 (29-27, 25-12, 25-15) by Smith College and 3-0 (25-10, 25-15, 25-15) by Colby-Sawyer College in Saturday afternoon's non-conference women's volleyball tri-match hosted by Smith College.

With the two losses, Elms falls to 2-4 overall, Smith moves to 1-2 on the season and Colby-Sawyer improves to 2-3 overall.

Against Smith, Clark and junior outside hitter Stacy Croteau (Agawam, Mass.) each had six kills to lead the Blazers' offense, while Fuller handed out 19 of her 24 assists for the day against the Pioneers.

Elms took Smith to the brink in the opening set hitting at a .250 clip with 14 kills but could not climb the hump as the Pioneers took an early 1-0 lead in the match.

Sophomore outside hitter Christina Martin (Chicopee, Mass.) and junior outside hitter Jenn Rego (Fall River, Mass.) each had three kills in the losing effort. Fuller and Clark added three assisted blocks apiece, while Rego led the squad with eight digs.

In the second match against Colby-Sawyer, Clark downed three kills and added a pair of solo stuffs to lead Elms, while Croteau notched a team-high five digs.

Elms returns to non-conference action on Tuesday, Sept. 14 when it hosts Westfield State College at 7:00 p.m. at Picknelly Arena.
