Women’s Volleyball Roars Past Bay Path, 3-1

CHICOPEE, Mass. – Elms College junior outside hitter Jenn Rego (Fall River, Mass.) smashed a match-best 19 kills and junior outside hitter Stacy Croteau (Agawam, Mass.) collected a match-high 23 digs to help pace the Blazers to a 3-1 (22-25, 25-16, 25-15, 25-20) victory over Bay Path College in Wednesday evening's New England Collegiate Conference women's volleyball match at Picknelly Arena.

With the win, Elms improves to 6-16 overall, 2-2 in NECC action, while Bay Path slides to 7-10 on the season, 2-3 in league play.

Leading 1-0 in the match, Bay Path built an early 15-9 lead in the second set before Elms erupted for twelve straight points to take a 21-15 lead. During the stretch, sophomore outside hitter Christina Martin (Chicopee, Mass.) served up four aces, Rego and Croteau downed a pair of kills each and senior middle hitter Laura Kulig (Holyoke, Mass.) added a kill to highlight the 12-0 run. A Blazers' service error halted the rally, but two kills by Croteau and a service ace by Rego sealed the set for Elms.

In the third frame, Elms held a narrow 14-11 lead before the Blazers strung together another impressive run, this time for eight consecutive points to post a 22-11 lead on the strength of three kills by Rego and two by Martin. Bay Path pulled to within nine at 24-15 but a service ace from Rego preserved the third set victory for the Blazers.

Trailing 17-15 in the fourth frame, the Blazers responded to the Wildcat's rally attempt by scoring 10 of the final 13 points as Rego floored three kills and added a service ace, senior middle hitter Melissa Clark (Chicopee, Mass.) notched two kills and freshman setter Ashley Fuller (Amherst, Mass.) registered two kills.

Martin finished with eight kills in the win, Clark downed seven and Croteau added six, while Fuller paced the offensive effort with 39 assists.

Clark and Fuller also notched 13 and 12 digs respectively, Rego finished with eight service aces.

Nadine Harkless (Westfield, Mass.) led Bay Path with 18 kills in defeat, while Davi Chuong (Easthampton, Mass.) downed four kills.

Harkless also led the squad in digs (17), while setter Ashley Provost (Ludlow, Mass.) followed with 15. Vanessa Chaplin (Attleboro, Mass.) and Chuong amassed 13 and 10 respectively to round out four Wildcats with double-digit digs.

Elms returns to the hardwood on Saturday, Oct. 23 when it travels to New London, Conn. for an NECC contest at Mitchell College. First serve is set for 12:00 p.m.
