Lasers Takedown Blazers in Quarterfinals, 3-0

AUBURNDALE, MA - Number three seeded Lasell University (19-13) registered 7 service aces and 34 kills to defeat Elms College (12-17), 3-0 (22-25, 20-25,17-25), in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Women's Volleyball Tournament quarterfinal on Tuesday evening.

PLAYOFF IMPLICATIONS:

With the win, Lasell moves on to the second round of the GNAC tourney and will head to #2 Johnson & Wales University in semifinal action on Thursday, start time 7PM.

For the Blazers, the loss brings an end to the 2022 season as well as the college careers of seniors Jaylianne Ramos Figueroa (Levittown, PR) And Laura Jensen (Torrence, CA). Both seniors will be greatly missed in the following season, but we wish them the best of luck in all of their future endevors. 

How it Happened

The Lasers held a comfortbale lead for most of the first match, attaining an 10-18 lead before the Blazers called for their second timeout. Elms was not quick to give up, they came back into the set with a three quick points (13-18) including a service ace by senior Laura Jensen, sending Lasell to their first timeout. The Blazers continued to strike back, tying up the score 22-22. Unable  to controll the rest of the set the Blazers would fall 22-25, Lasell up 1-0 in the match.

Opening up the second set with a 0-7 run by the Lasers, Elms headed to an early timout. Lasell created a six point lead (13-18) which the Blazers fired up their offense and knocked it down to only a two point difference (14-16). Unable to crack Lasells defense the Blazers came up short 20-25 in the second set, Lasell up 2-0 in the match.

Lasell attained a hitting percentage of .125 in the third set with 13 kills to send them to a 25-17 victory over the Blazers. Elms was unable to keep a steady momentum to build up a run against the Lasers in the final set. Lasell takes the match and heads to the semifinals.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Jaylen Holman had a final double double of her first year as a Blazer with 15 assistss and 16 digs.
  • Jaylianne Ramos Figueroa finished out her career with a double double with 12 kills and 13 digs against Lasell.
  • Laura Jensen finsihed with 7 kills and matched Figueroa with 13 digs
  • The team had 6 service aces, falling short by only one to the Lasers (7)
