Women's Volleyball Sweep Conference Tri Match

CHICOPEE, MA- The Elms College Women's Volleyball team head home after winning both conference matches against the Emmanuel College Saints and the Dean College Bulldogs. The Blazers took down both teams in 3 sets this afternoon.

How it Happened, 1st Match

Both teams were eager to take hold of the lead early in the first set, tying the score up at 7's, 10's and 23's. Neither team was giving the other a chance at a lead bigger than three points. With both teams at 23, the Blazers made an attempt to take the win, but the saints called a timeout slowing their momentum. Elms is up 26-25, needing two points to secure the set. Due to an error by the Saints, senior Laura Jensen strikes down a final kill, Blazers win 28-25. Elms leading the match 1-0.

The Blazers had power behind their hits early in the second set going on a 7-0 point run, with two service aces from senior Alyssa Moore and two kills from Jaylianne Ramos Figueroa. Elms built a lead of 11-4 but it wasn't long before the Saints pick away at it point by point. What was a seven point lead turned into only a one point lead, 16-15. Both teams continued back and fourth for three points, until the Blazers went on a 4-0 run now ahead 23-19. The Blazers secure the second set, 25-20 off of two kills by Jensen. Elms now up 2-0 in the match.

Elms prevailed the third and final set, 25-19. The Blazers had a hitting percentage of .125 against the Saints who attained a -.152 for the set. Leading with four more kills overall in the set, Elms would take the the first win of the tri match over the Emmanuel College Saints.

How it Happened, 2nd Match

Elms held the lead for the whole first set against the Anna Maria Bulldogs winning 25-17. Despite the score the Blazers only had two more kills over than the Bulldogs, going 12-10. Elms would secure the first set, leading 1-0 in the match.

The Bulldogs and the Blazers went back and fourth point for point at the start of the second set. The Blazers would pull away on a lead of ten points, after going on a 10-0 run mid set. This was create a gap that the Bulldogs were unable to come back from. Elms would win the second set 25-14, now 2-0 in the match.

Elms would win the third set 25-5. The Blazers attained a .632 hitting percentage in the final set, the highest of their season. 

Inside the Numbers

  • Jaylianne Ramos Figueroa had a totall of 44 kills in the tri match (24 against Emmanuel and 20 against Dean)
  • Jaylen Holman had a double double in each match (34 assists and 14 digs against Emmanuel, 29 assists and 13 digs against Dean)
  • Samantha Bassell had 11 digs in the match against Dean to follow closely behind Holman
