Blazers Sweep Homecoming Tri Match

CHICOPEE, MA - Great way to end the homecoming weekend with a tri match sweep by our Elms College Blazers women's volleyball team. The Norwich Cadets and the Saint Joseph's (Maine) Monks both fell short going 3-1 against the Blazers in each of their matches.

Basics

Score: Blazers 3 | Cadets 1

Records: Blazers (4-6)(2-0) | Cadets (5-5)(0-2)

Set Scores: (25-22, 25-20, 23-25, 25-22)

The Blazers came out hot winning the first two sets of the match against the Norwich Cadets. Elms went on a couple three point leads that helped them keep the lead for the majority of both sets. But the Cadets werent going down without a fight, only coming up short by a couple points both sets (25-22, 25-20). The Blazers had a hitting percentage of .310 in the first set and .273 in the second whereas the Cadets had .194 in the first and .089 in the second.

Norwich swooped in with a 23-25 win over the Blazers in the third set to keep Elms on their toes. The Cadets were down 5-10 when Coach Knuckles called for a timeout to regroup the teams mindset. Norwich came back with power and went on a 4-0 run to put them just one point behind the Blazers. Within a couple back and forth points the Cadets had taken the lead and ended on a two point run.

The Blazers finished up the match with a kill after kill preformance in the fourth set. Jaylianne Figueroa (6) and Laura Jensen (5) had 11 of the kill combined for the set. The Cadets midway came back from a 20-15 lead, just coming up short by three points at the end. The Blazers win the first match 3-1.

Inside the Numbers:

  • Jaylianne Figueroa led the blazers with 18 (.389) kills, followed by Laura Jensen with 17 (.327) in the match
  • Jaylen Holman scoring 39 assists and 11 digs in the match attaining a double double

Set Scores: (25-20, 25-18, 17-25, 25-13)

The Blazers took the first set but only with a five point difference from the Saint Joseph's Monks. Despite winning 25-20, the Monks led the set with a hitting percentage of .289 closely followed by the Blazers with .242.

Elms jumped into the second set with both feet ready to go, with the Monks battling hard they were unable to keep up as the Blazers went on a couple runs to secure the lead. The Blazers won the second set 25-18

The Monks came into the third set with fire, going on a 0-6 run to start it off causing Elms to call for a time out. No matter how hard the Blazers tried to grab hold of the lead they were unable to match the Monks as they went on a rampage. In the third set alone the Saint Joseph women's volleyball team had 11 kills with a team hitting percentage of .333. The Monks would secure the third set 17-25, 1-2 in the match.

The fourth set began with a back and forth point for point battle until the Blazers found their momentum. Just about midway through Elms went on a back to back 5-0 run to jump to a 10 point lead. The Blazers would win the match 3-1.
