Women's Volleyball Celebrate Their Seniors for a Double Match Against Chargers and Falcons

CHICOPEE, MA - The Elms College Women's Volleyball team honored their two seniors on Saturday, Oct 29th against both the Colby Sawyer College Chargers and the Fisher College Falcons. The Blazers went on to win the first match against the Chargers 3-0, falling in the second match to the Falcons 2-3.

How it Happened

The Blazers serged to a first set victory over the Chargers, winning 25-19. Elms started off the set leading only by a point, with the Chargers closely following behind. With the set tied at 10's the Blazers new they had to get a lead to secure the win. Going on a 3-0 point run the Chargers called a timeout, which would send them back in the match striking down a kill to end the Blazers run. Despite the Chargers attempt at pinching the gap and taking the lead the Blazers would close out the first set, leading 1-0 in the match.

Elms carried their mommentum into the second set and quickly created a comfortbale lead. Going on a 6-0 point run with 3 kills by senior Jaylianne Ramos Figueroa (Puerto Rico) the Blazers would hold an 8-3 lead early in the set. The Chargers were able to get a couple points, closing the gap to only a five point difference. But Elms did not let up and ended the match with a 5-0 run, securing the second match point. 

The Chargers were not letting up in the third set, holding the lead over the Blazers. Elms tied up the score 7-7 but ended up falling behind again, the Chargers now ahead 9-12. With three kills by Senior Laura Jensen bringing the score 12-14, the Blazers began to work their way past the Chargers. Figueroa would strike down a kill and two service aces taking a point lead over the Chargers causing Colby Sawyer to call for a timeout. The break was all the Blazers needed to come back in the game and take down the Chargers in a 25-19 set. 

Second Match

The Falcons and the Blazers took to the first set with similar playing styles, both keeping onloy a point difference from eachother. During the set Fisher tied up the score at 6's, 11's and lastley at 16's. Once the Falcons grabbed onto a two point lead the Blazers were unable to comeback and win the set. Fisher would win 23-25, taking the first match point.

Elms started the second set with power behind ever kill and played incredible defense the secure a 7-4 lead early in the set. Fisher was not giving up as they contiued to fight back and close the game to only a point difference with the score 13-12 causing the Blazers to call for a timeout. Reset Elms come back into the set going on a 6-0 point run, causing Fisher to take a timeout after the Blazers struck down  their third kill and once again after they scored their sixth point. The Blazers would go on to win the set 25-15, tying the match 1-1.

The Blazers were able to clinch the third set, 25-18. The Blazers went on a 7-0 point run after the score had been tied 16-16. With that final run it sent the Blazers to a set victory, taking the lead on the match 2-1.

With the fourth set played similarly to the first the Blazers and the Falcons exchange point for point. Tying the set multiple times switching the lead on and off betweent he two. With the score tied one last time 22-22, the Blazers were unable to keep the ball in the air. With a final timeout call with the score 22-24 in Fishers favor, the Blazers attempted to regroup. Despite the efforts, fisher would secure the fourth set, tying up the match 2-2.

Just like the rest of the match the fifth set was another nail biter, both teams working their hardest to get the perfect kill. With the set tied 12-12, Fisher would knock down two quick points. With Fisher up to serve for match point, Elms would call for a final time. The Blazers step back on the court ready to make a comeback, erning two back to back points closing the gap 14-15. Fisher would secure the set win 16-18, taking the match victory over the Blazers.

Inside the Numebrs

  • Jaylianne Ramos Figueroa would lead the Blazers in both matches with 17 kills in the first match.
  • Laura Jensen would follow closely behind with 15 kills and 14 digs ending the first match with a double double.
  • Jaylen Holman would attain 31 assists in the first match.
  • Figueroa and Jensen would both end the match with a double double both having 21 kills, Figueroa with 16 digs and Jensen with 15.
  • Holman would also have a double double this match with 45 assists and 18 digs.
  • Alyssa Moore had 18 digs in the second match.

The Blazers head to the first round of the GNAC Women's Volleyball Championship with their first match on Tuesday, November 1st against Lasell University at 7PM. The match will be hosted at Lasell University, but you will be able to watch the live event at ecblazers.com.
