Second Half Spark Lifts MCLA Over Women’s Soccer, 2-0

Box Score

CHICOPEE, Mass. – Elms College junior goalkeeper Kelly Callahan (Monson, Mass.) notched nine saves but Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts' (MCLA) Brianna Bresett (Adams, Mass.) scored what proved to the game-winner five minutes into the second period to help spark the Trailblazers to a 2-0 victory in Thursday afternoon's non-conference women's soccer game at Leary Field.

With the loss, Elms fall to 2-9 on the season, while MCLA wins its fifth straight to improve to 6-2-2 overall.

After a scoreless opening period, Bresett put MCLA on the board five minutes into the second frame when she picked up a loose ball in front of the net and tapped into the right side of the goal giving the Trailblazers a 1-0 advantage.

Eleven minutes later, MCLA extended its lead to 2-0 when Samantha Miller (Reading, Mass.) sent a pass to Jess Tietgens (Stamford, Vt.) who beat the defense for a breakaway goal up the middle of the field.

Callahan made seven of her nine saves in the second stanza to keep the deficit at two, but Elms was limited to just five shots in the second half.

Elms' freshman midfielder Christina Goodchild (East Longmeadow, Mass.) and junior forward Jennifer Killion (Cambridge, Mass.) each blasted three shots on net, but nine saves from MCLA net minder Jen Wehner (Cooperstown, N.Y.) kept the Blazers off the board.

Miller and Lindsay Borbolla (Greenwich, N.Y.) each placed three shots on goal in the winning effort for the Trailblazers.

Elms will next host Southern Vermont College on Wednesday, Oct. 13 in a New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) contest. Game time is slated for 5:30 p.m. at Leary Field.
