MIDDLEBURY, V.T. – The Elms College men's golf team checked in at 23rd on the team leaderboard after the first round of competition at the 32nd annual Duke Nelson Invitational, hosted by Middlebury College at the Ralph Myre Golf Course Saturday afternoon.

The Blazers posted a team score of 340 through the opening 18 holes. Sophomore Mike Fleury (West Springfield, Mass.) carded the lowest round on the team, shooting an eight-over 79 for a share of 28th. Sophomore Brian Cowles (East Longmeadow, Mass.) sits ties at 70th with an 83, while senior Dan Olive (Jefferson Township, N.J.) was four strokes back at 103rd. Freshman Chris Soderberg (Northampton, Mass.) rounded out the Blazers golfers, taking a share of 117th with a 91.

Williams College leads the event with a 305, followed by Rensselaer (309), Babson (311), Trinity (CT) (315), and Salem State make up the top 5 on the team leaderboard.

"It was a tough day on the links up here," said Elms College Head Coach Craig Cowles. "We dealt with heavy winds, gusts up to 25-30 miles per hour. The course is in the best shape it's been since I've been here. The green played a big part today. We had many shots that should have ended up on the green bounce over. It started to sprinkle near the end of the round, so hopefully that will soften them up. Mike [Fleury] and Brian [Cowles] had the team lows, and we'll have some work to put in tomorrow."

The Blazers will be back on the course for the final round on play Sunday morning.
