Wheelock Outlasts Field Hockey, 3-1

Box Score

CHICOPEE, Mass. – Elms College senior forward Alison McBride (East Providence, R.I.) netted her first goal of the season, but a pair of second half scores by Wheelock College gave the Wildcats a 3-1 victory over the Blazers in Saturday afternoon's New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) field hockey game at Leary Field.

With the loss, Elms slips to 0-13 on the season, 0-5 in conference play, while Wheelock improves to 5-5 overall, 4-1 in league action.

Taylor Rogers (Essex, Mass.) put Wheelock on the board first as she scored with a shot in the far left corner of the cage after controlling a pass from Rachel Robohm (North Easton, Mass.) at the 10:55 mark.

Twenty minutes later, Elms answered as McBride tipped in a bullet off the stick of senior forward Andrea Ramsdell (Gardner, Mass.), knotting the game at 1-1 just before intermission.

At the 53:22 mark, Kara Widdison (Greenfield, Mass.) fired a shot that was saved by Blazers' junior  goalkeeper Alexandra Bonavita (Agawam, Mass.), controlled the rebound, and then knocked the ball into the net giving the Wildcats a 2-1 lead with what proved to be the game-clinching goal.

Two minutes later, Wheelock's Despina Savvoulides (Norwalk, Conn.) netted an insurance goal on a loose ball in the middle of the circle giving the Wildcats a 3-1 advantage.

Wheelock's defense kept Elms off the board in the second half as goalkeeper Michelle Greene (Mansfield, Mass.) didn't need to make a save en route to earning the victory after coming into the contest to start the second half in place of Meredith Race (Marion, Mass.).

Bonavita registered an impressive 27 saves in the losing effort for the Blazers.

Elms returns to NECC action on Wednesday, Oct. 20 when it hosts Becker College. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. at Leary Field.
