Daniel Webster Nets Three Second Half Goals To Outlast Field Hockey, 3-1

Box Score

CHICOPEE, Mass. – Elms College sophomore midfielder Rachel Butt (Agawam, Mass.) netted the Blazers' first goal of the season on a penalty corner service late in the first half, but three second half scores by Daniel Webster College lifted the Eagles to a 3-1 win in Tuesday evening's New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) field hockey game.

With the loss, Elms falls to 0-11 on the season, 0-4 in league play, while Daniel Webster improves to 7-2 on the season, 4-0 in NECC action. In just its third year of existence, the seventh win for the Eagles is a single-season program record.

After playing an even first period, Elms finally got its first tally of the season with 1:08 to play in the opening frame. Butt fired a laser after receiving a penalty corner service from junior forward Jenna Lipscomb (Cambridge, Mass.) giving the Blazers a 1-0 lead at intermission.

Daniel Webster responded just 3:48 into the second half when Natalie Bates (N. Kingstown, R.I.) capitalized on a penalty corner opportunity, finding the back of the cage when Samantha Bark (Belfast, Maine) fed the ball into Brandi Ritz (Burlington, N.J.) who delivered a one-timer to Bates.

Two minutes later, Sierra Ackerman (Saratoga, Calif.) scored the Eagles second goal of the contest, giving Daniel Webster a 2-1 lead.

Courtney Brennan (Beverly, Mass.) gave the Eagles an insurance goal when she made a diving swipe at the ball and sent it past Elms' sophomore goalkeeper Alexandra Bonavita (Agawam, Mass.) to cap the scoring at 3-1 in the 47th minute of play.

Bonavita made nine of her 13 saves during the second 35 minutes, while Eagles' goalkeeper Amy Prince (Hope Valley, R.I.) notched three saves in the winning effort.

Bates, Brennan and Ackerman accounted for 15 of Daniel Webster's 16 shots on goal, firing six, five and four shots respectively.

Butt notched a pair of shots on target, while sophomore forward Jaclyn Mederios (Brant Rock, Mass.) and freshman midfielder Brianna Lyons (Canton, Mass.) added one each.

Elms returns to action on Thursday, Oct. 14 when it travels to Paxton, Mass. for a non-league contest against Anna Maria College. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
