Field Hockey Falls To Smith College, 3-0

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.  – Elms College sophomore goalkeeper Alexandra Bonavita (Agawam, Mass.) registered nine saves, but three goals from Smith College allowed the Pioneers to come away with a 3-0 victory over the Blazers in Saturday afternoon's non-conference field hockey game in day one action at the Betty Richey Invitational Field Hockey Tournament hosted by Vassar College.  

With the loss, Elms falls to 0-2 on the season, while Smith improves to 2-1 overall.

Smith scored early when Natalie Wickles (Hatfield, Mass.) delivered an unassisted goal 4:14 into the contest. The Pioneers upped their advantage to 2-0 at the 21:09 mark when Nia Spooner (Bronx, N.Y.) found Phoebe Hopkins (Philadelphia, Pa.) who capitalized with a scoring strike.

The Pioneers concluded the scoring when Rebecca Rosen scored with 9:05 left to play, giving Smith a 3-0 victory.

Five of Bonavita's nine saves came in the second stanza.

Elms returns to Betty Richey tournament action Sunday, Sept. 12 with a 10:00 a.m. contest against Manhattanville College.
