CHESTNUT HILL, MA – Elms College senior
setter Kim Phillips (Randolph, MA) dished out 15
assists and added 13 digs for her eighth double-double of the
season to help lift the Blazers to a 3-0 (25-17, 25-16, 25-15)
sweep of Pine Manor College in Tuesday’s non-conference
women’s volleyball match.
With the win, Elms extends its winning streak to four matches to
improve to 7-18 overall. Pine Manor dropped to 1-20 on the season
with the loss.
Elms set the tone early as the Blazers used an 8-1 run in the
first set, highlighted by five consecutive service aces from
Phillips to seal the 25-17 victory.
Leading 1-0 in the match, the Blazers broke an 11-11 stalemate by
scoring eight of the next nine points to post a 19-12 lead in the
frame and didn’t look back, cruising to a 25-16 win and a 2-0
lead in the contest.
Elms stormed out to a 7-1 lead in the third set behind five
straight service aces from sophomore outside hitter Stacy
Croteau (Agawam, MA) and eventually upped the margin to
23-10. The Gators used a 5-0 run to cut the gap to 23-15 but could
get no closer.
Phillips directed a well-balanced offensive attack as Croteau
downed a team-high eight kills on 14 swings with just three errors
for a .357 hitting percentage in addition to serving up a
staggering 10 aces. She also dug eight balls in the winning
effort.
Sophomore outside hitter Jen Rego (Fall River,
MA) added six kills and five assists, while senior middle
hitter Melissa Clark (Chicopee, MA) added five
kills and a solo block to help Elms to an impressive team hitting
clip of .370.
Elms will close out regular season action on Saturday, Oct. 31 in
a tri-match at Southern Vermont. The Blazers will compete against
the host Mountaineers at 11:00 a.m. before taking on Lesley at 1:00
p.m.
