Women’s Volleyball Sweeps By Mitchell, 3-0
CHICOPEE, MA – Elms College senior middle
hitter Melissa Clark (Chicopee, MA) served up six
aces and added 10 digs to help pace the Blazers to a 3-0 (25-17,
25-17, 25-17) sweep of Mitchell College in Saturday
afternoon’s New England Collegiate Conference (NECC)
women’s volleyball match at Picknelly Arena.
With the win, Elms extends its winning streak to three matches to
up its record to 6-18 on the season, 3-2 in NECC action. Mitchell
falls to 5-9 overall, 2-3 in league action.
Leading 2-0 in the contest, Elms built a 23-15 lead in the third
frame before a Blazers service error and attacking error brought
Mitchell to within six at 23-17. The Mariners then committed their
own service error and Clark delivered her sixth ace of the match to
seal the victory.
Sophomore outside hitter Stacy Croteau (Agawam,
MA) smashed a match-high seven kills and is currently in a
tie with Valda Rivera for third on the
program’s all-time kills list with 314.
Clark and sophomore setter/outside hitter Jen Rego (Fall
River, MA) each had five kills in the winning effort.
Elms cruised to a 20-11 lead to open the first stanza, before
Mitchell strung together four straight points to pull to within
five at 20-15. Two Mariners miscues upped the Blazers’ lead
to 22-15 before Elms closed out the set with a 3-2 run over the
next five points.
After a back-and-forth effort set the score at 17-16 in favor of
Elms, the Blazers struck for eight of the final nine points of the
second set, highlighted by a kill and a service ace from Clark, as
well as a kill from Phillips to post a 2-0 lead in the contest.
Phillips finished with three kills and 15 assists in the match,
while freshman outside hitter Christina Martin (Chicopee,
MA) contributed a match-high 11 digs in the win.
Jen Bordonaro (Winsted, CT) paced the
Mariners’ attack with 12 assists and added six digs, while
Stephanie Davis (Ledyard, CT) also chipped in with
six digs in the losing effort.
Heather-Renae Powers (Niantic, CT) led
Mitchell’s offensive attack with five kills.
Elms returns to action on Tuesday, Oct. 27 when it travels to Pine
Manor for a non-conference contest. First-serve is slated for 7:00
p.m.
