WATERVILLE, ME – Elms College sophomore
outside hitter Stacy Croteau (Agawam, MA) downed a
total of nine kills to help lift the Blazers to a split of
Saturday’s non-conference volleyball doubleheader at the
Thomas Tournament.
Elms lost Saturday’s opening match to Maine-Presque Isle 3-0
(13-25, 27-29, 8-25) but bounced back to sweep Massachusetts
Maritime Academy in the second match (25-15, 25-9, 25-16) to
improve the Blazers’ season record to 2-1.
In Elms’ sweep of Mass. Maritime, Croteau led an impressive
offensive attack with six kills in addition to serving up five
aces. Sophomore setter Jen Rego (Fall River, MA)
followed with five kills and six assists.
Senior setter Kim Phillips (Randolph, MA) downed
four kills on seven attempts with no errors (.571 hitting
percentage) while senior Melissa Clark (Chicopee,
MA) hit at an .800 clip for the match, blasting four kills
on five swings with no errors. Clark was also a force on defense
smashing three solo blocks.
Croteau chipped in with six digs, while Clark and Phillips added
five and four respectively.
Phillips directed the Blazers’ offense with 12 assists as
the team hit at an impressive .306 clip (26K 9E 55TA) for the
match.
In the loss to Maine-Presque Isle, Croteau, senior middle hitter
Laura Kulig (Holyoke, MA) and Clark each delivered
three kills, while Rego handed out seven helpers.
The Blazers return to action Thursday, Sept. 10 when it hosts WPI
in a non-conference match. First-serve is slated for 7:00 p.m.
