NASHUA, NH – Elms College senior middle hitter
Melissa Clark (Chicopee, MA) downed a team-high
five kills but Chelsey Crawford (Westfield, MA)
downed a match-high 14 kills to pace No. 1 Daniel Webster College
to a 3-0 (13-25, 14-25, 16-25) sweep of the fourth-seeded Blazers
in Saturday morning’s New England Collegiate Conference
(NECC) Championship tournament semifinal match at Mario Vagge
Gym.
With the loss, Elms is eliminated from postseason action and
finishes its 2009 season 9-20 overall. Daniel Webster earned a spot
in the championship match and ups its record to 15-6 on the season
with the win.
Elms was led offensively by Clark’s five kills, while
sophomore setter/outside hitter Jen Rego (Fall River,
MA), sophomore outside hitter Stacy Croteau
(Agawam, MA) and senior setter Kim Phillips
(Randolph, MA) planted four kills each in the losing
effort.
Phillips captained the attack by handing out 11 of the
squad’s 18 assists in the match. Freshman outside hitter
Christina Martin (Chicopee, MA) collected a
team-best nine digs and added three kills in the contest.
Daniel Webster setter Caitlyn DePierro (Billerica,
MA) directed the Eagles’ offense that hit .360 for
the match with 27 assists. Crawford connected for 14 kills while
Brier Temple (Concord, NH) and Samantha
Hill (Hudson, NH) delivered six each.
Kristina Rieger (Concord, NH) anchored the
defensive effort by digging a match-high 13 balls to help seal the
victory.
