Daniel Webster Sweeps Women’s Volleyball Tri-Match
CHICOPEE, MA – Elms College senior setter
Kim Phillips (Randolph, MA) collected a combined
28 assists over two matches, but Daniel Webster was able to claim
3-0 victories over Newbury College and the Blazers in Saturday
afternoon’s New England Collegiate Conference (NECC)
women’s volleyball tri-match at Picknelly Arena.
Newbury defeated Elms in the opening match 3-1 (25-22, 17-25,
17-25, 23-25) while Daniel Webster took a 3-0 (25-20, 25-22, 25-19)
decision from the Nighthawks in the neutral match. The Eagles
finished its sweep with a 3-0 (13-25, 13-25, 22-25) victory over
Elms in the day’s final match.
With its two losses, Elms falls to 3-13 overall, 0-2 in league
action; Newbury moves to 6-13 on the season, 1-1 in conference
play; and Daniel Webster improves to 5-3 overall, and remains
perfect in NECC action at 3-0.
In the opening match, Elms broke out of the gate with a 25-22 set
one victory, from there Newbury rallied for a pair of 25-17 set
victories to take a 2-1 lead in the contest. In the fourth set, the
sides fought tooth-and-nail to a 22-22 tie before a pair of Blazer
attacking errors and a kill by Stephanie Williams (Medford,
MA) allowed the Nighthawks to score three of the next four
points and seal the opening match.
Elms sophomore outside hitter Stacy Croteau (Agawam,
MA) finished with a double-double, including a match-high
11 kills to go along with 11 digs.
Newbury had five players register double-digit digs, led by
Sarah Young’s (Waterloo, NY) match-best
20-dig effort.
In the second match, Daniel Webster built a 17-14 lead and never
let Newbury get to within more than three, taking the first set
25-20. Leading 21-20 in the second frame, Daniel Webster scored
four of the final six points, highlighted by kills from Young and
Chelsey Crawford (Westfield, MA), to stake a 2-0
lead in the contest.
In the third stanza, the Eagles roared out to a 24-15 lead before
Newbury struck for four-straight points, moving the score to 24-19.
From there, Daniel Webster closed out the frame and the contest
with a kill by Crawford, her ninth of the match.
Crawford and Kristina Rieger (Concord, NH) each
downed a match-high nine kills, while Caitlyn DePierro
(Billerica, MA) handed out a match-best 24 assists.
Newbury’s Jesse Urrey (Cobleskill, NY) dug
a match-high 13 balls in the losing effort.
In the final contest of the day, Daniel Webster claimed the first
two sets by a score of 25-13. In the third stanza, the squads
battled to a 20-20 tie before four straight points brought the
score to 24-20. Phillips then struck for a kill and a service ace
to bring the Blazers to within two at 24-22, but a kill by
Samantha Hill (Hudson, NH) sealed the match.
Crawford and Hill finished the match with 12 and 11 kills
respectively in the win for the Eagles while Hannah Preston
(George Mills, NH) was solid off the bench with 12
assists.
Sophomore setter/outside hitter Jen Rego (Fall River,
MA) totaled a match-high 14 digs in the losing effort.
Elms returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 7 when it travels to
take on St. Joe’s in Connecticut. Match-time is slated for
7:00 p.m.
