CHICOPEE, MA – Elms College senior forward Krystyna Gagne (Methuen, MA) scored the only goal of the game in the 66th minute to lift the Blazers to a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Smith College in Wednesday evening’s non-conference women’s soccer game at Leary Field.

With its second straight win, and first-ever against Smith, Elms improves to 2-4 on the season while the Pioneers slide to 1-5 overall.

Gagne gave the Blazers a 1-0 lead at the 65:53 mark following a blast from sophomore forward Jen Killion (Cambridge, MA) and a save by Smith keeper Lindsey Gregor (Bradenton, FL). Gagne controlled the rebound and punched it into the back of the net for her third score of the season and what would prove to be the game-winner.

Elms had a chance to increase its lead when Killion fired a laser off a pass from Gagne, but Gregor made an incredible lunging save to keep the score at 1-0 in the 89th minute of play.

From there, the Blazers were able to keep the ball in the Pioneers’ third of the field to secure the squad’s second victory of the season.

Gagne and Killion paced the Elms attack with three shots each, while Smith’s Ellie Theurer (Gainesville, FL) delivered three shots of her own.

Gregor finished with six saves on the evening while Blazers freshman goalie Molly Corse (Bernardston, MA) turned away four shots.

Elms returns to the pitch on Sunday, Sept. 27 when it travels to Cambridge, MA to take on Lesley University in the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) opener. Game time is set for 12:00 p.m.
