CHICOPEE, MA – Elms College senior forward
Krystyna Gagne (Methuen, MA) netted three goals
and the Blazers used nine second-half scores to complete a 10-0
victory over Newbury College in a New England Collegiate Conference
(NECC) contest Wednesday afternoon at Leary Field.
With the win, Elms improves to 6-7-1 record overall and is 4-1 in
the NECC, while the loss drops Newbury to 2-6-2 on the season, and
1-3 in conference play.
Newbury had a chance to score early, as Ashley Green-Allen
(Brockton, MA) dribbled past the Blazer defense and
launched a shot past the out-stretched arms of Elms freshman
goalkeeper Molly Corse (Bernardston, MA).
Blazers’ defender Serina Percoski (Westfield, MA), in a
brilliant heads-up effort, cleared the ball out of the box,
preventing the Nighthawks from taking an early 1-0 lead.
From there, Gagne scored the only goal of the first period when
she sent the ball to the top right corner of the net 20 minutes
into the game.
Five minutes into the second stanza, junior forward Alison
Couture (Chicopee, MA) netted her first of two strikes,
placing a loose ball in the back of the net, upping the lead to
2-0. Senior midfielder Shannon Schickler (Adams,
MA) netted her first of two goals soon thereafter, scoring
off a cross from senior midfielder Vanessa Pare
(Belchertown, MA) who had the ball played to her by
Couture.
Junior Stephanie Magalhaes (Granby, MA) took a
pass from Couture and buried it into the back of the net for her
second goal of the season. Within minutes senior Kelsey
Battige (Monson, MA) used a deflected ball to net a goal.
Getting in on the action late was Pare whose give and go to
Schickler caught the defense off guard.
Couture then found junior midfielder Magalhaes who netted her
second goal of the season at the 57:56 mark, giving Elms a 4-0
lead.
From there, senior forward Battige and Pare would add their first
goals of the contest, while Couture and Schickler each added their
second goals of the game. Gagne also tallied two more scores over
the final 16 minutes.
The Blazers outshot the Nighthawks 35-7 on the day.
Newbury freshman goalie Tianna Dimaria (Plantsville,
CT) made eight saves in the losing effort, while Elms
freshman net-minder Corse posted her sixth shut-out of the
season.
The Blazers return to action Saturday, Oct. 17 as they play host
to Wheelock College in an NECC contest slated to start at 3:30 p.m.
at Leary Field.
