Daniel Webster Downs Women’s Basketball, 76-50

CHICOPEE, Mass. – Elms College junior forward Erika Murphy (Torrington, Conn.) scored a team-high 13 points but Daniel Webster College's Alycia Gervais (Windham, Conn.) drained a game-high 21 points including hitting on 6 of 9 from beyond the arc to help lift the Eagles to a 76-50 win over the Blazers in Saturday afternoon's New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) women's basketball game at Picknelly Arena.

With the loss, Elms moves to 6-9 overall, 4-2 in conference play, while Daniel Webster improves to 14-2 on the season, 7-0 in NECC action.

Elms rushed out to a 12-4 lead at the 4:26 into the contest when Blazers' freshman guard Ellen Donohue (Southington, Conn.) nailed a jumper to put Elms ahead by eight. Freshman forward Nicolette Martin (Colchester, Conn.) converted a layup underneath at the 6:32 mark to give the Blazers their largest lead of the game of 11 points (24:13).

Daniel Webster answered when Gervais sparked a 13-4 run over the final 5:50, scoring eight points on the strength of two treys and a layup during the stretch to pull the Eagles to within two at 28-26 at intermission.

Daniel Webster scored 11 straight points to start the second half as Vanessa Bosques (North Windham, Conn.) nailed a three to start the run, while Alyssa Regan (Salem, N.H.) capped the span with a layup to give the Eagles a 37-28 lead with 16:58 to play in the game.

A jumper by Murphy at the 11:35 mark pulled Elms to within three at 41-38, but seven unanswered points capped by a Gervais trey extended the lead back to 10 points at 48-38 with 10:15 remaining in the game.

From there, Daniel Webster maintained at least an eight point cushion and led by as many as 27 as the Eagles used an 18-5 run from the 7:37 mark to the 2:02 mark to establish a 74-47 lead, before finishing the contest with a 76-50 win.

Martin finished with nine points and five rebounds, while sophomore guard Jen Normandie (Westford, Mass.) added eight points in the losing effort.

Daniel Webster, which held Elms to 29.5-percent shooting from the floor, registered a 39.7 shooting percentage as Regan finished with 16 points, followed by Bosques and Kristen Murphy (Woodstock, Vt.) who totaled 14 points each. Bosques is now three points shy of becoming the sixth player in Eagles' program history to break the 1,000-point barrier.

In addition to her shooting prowess, Gervais hauled in a game-high 16 rebounds and dished out seven assists.

Elms returns to NECC action on Tuesday, Jan. 25 when it travels to Bennington, Vt. for an 8:00 p.m. contest against Southern Vermont College.
