Women’s Basketball Surges Past Johnson State, 67-51

CHICOPEE, Mass. – Elms College junior guard Katie Condon (Sandy Hook, Conn.) poured in 13 points and notched 14 rebounds to help pace the Blazers to a 67-51 victory over Johnson State College in opening day action of the 2010 Blazer Tip-Off women's basketball tournament hosted by Elms College on Friday at Picknelly Arena.

With the win, Elms moves to 1-1 on the season while Johnson State falls to 0-2 overall.

Simmons College (2-0) defeated Bard College (0-2) in Friday's second contest, 60-48.

Johnson State and Bard will meet in the consolation game at 2:00 p.m. with the championship game to follow at 4:00 p.m. between Elms and Simmons.

Elms 67, Johnson State 51

Three Elms players scored in double digits as Condon and junior forward Erika Murphy (Torrington, Conn.) tied for a team-high 13 points, while freshman guard Marisabel Santiago (Springfield, Mass.) added 11 points and four steals in the winning effort.

Murphy added 10 rebounds, while sophomore guard Jen Normandie (Westford, Mass.) collected eight points and nine boards off the bench for the Blazers.

Johnson State's Jennifer Ferrari (Westfield, Mass.) was superb in defeat for the Badgers draining a game-best 21 points and hauling in a team-high 13 rebounds. Andrea Deuell (Milton, Vt.) added 14 points, five steals and dished out five assists in the loss.

Simmons 60, Bard 48

In Friday's second contest, Simmons' Liz O'Connor (Milton, Mass.) led all scorers with 28 points on 7 of 12 shooting from the floor and 14 of 19 from the free throw line. Alex Acloque (Randolph, Mass.) was equally impressive on the boards amassing an astonishing 21 rebounds (16 on defense) for the Sharks.

Emily Thomas (Cheshire, Conn.) added 13 points and eight boards in the win, while Brittany Dollof (Hollis, N.H.) netted eight points.

Bard was led by Caitlin Dullea (West Stockholm, N.Y.) who dropped in a team-best 10 points, while Marissa Papatola (St. Paul, Minn.) added eight. Five other Raptors finished with five points each in the losing  effort.
