Acosta, Rainey, Murphy Earn NECC Weekly Honors

ATTLEBORO, Mass. – Elms College had three players garner New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) weekly awards in men’s volleyball and women’s basketball as announced by the league on Monday.

Junior men’s volleyball player Yonalvy Acosta (Holyoke, Mass.) was named NECC Player of the Week for the first time this season after pacing the Blazers to a 3-0 week on the strength of a .356 hitting percentage over the three matches. Acosta downed 33 kills on 73 attempts with just seven errors in addition adding nine total blocks and 16 digs for the week.

Freshman Bryson Rainey (Brookline, Mass.) was named NECC Rookie of the Week in men’s volleyball following a 35-kill, 35-dig effort during Elms’ 3-0 week that included NECC wins over Southern Vermont College and Daniel Webster College. Rainey claimed his second rookie of the week accolade after hitting .324 for the week (35K, 13E, 68TA) and finished with an average of 3.89 kills and 3.89 digs during the three-match stretch.

Junior women’s basketball player Erika Murphy (Torrington, Conn.) continues to excel as she was named NECC Player of the Week for the fourth time this season. Murphy led the Blazers to a 1-1 week behind a 23-point, 19-rebound performance against Southern Vermont and added 20 boards in a loss to Mitchell College.  She also handed out six assists during the week.
