Women’s Basketball Flies By Becker College, 73-48

LEICESTER, Mass. – Elms College junior forward Erika Murphy (Torrington, Conn.) netted a game-high 19 points and hauled in a game-best 12 rebounds to help pace the Blazers to a convincing 73-48 victory in Tuesday evening's New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) women's basketball game.

With the win, Elms has now won two straight to improve to 4-8 overall, 2-1 in league play. Becker falls to 2-9 on the season, 0-3 in NECC action.

Elms' freshman guard Ellen Donohue (Southington, Conn.) set the tone early for the Blazers nailing a three-pointer on the team's opening possession followed by a bucket underneath from sophomore guard Jen Normandie (Westford, Mass.) to give Elms a quick 5-0 lead.

Becker rallied to pull to within three with just under 10 minutes to play in the opening period when Hayley Ooms (Valatie, N.Y.), Heidi Miller (Sanborton, N.H.) and Tatiana Mojica (Worcester, Mass.) each delivered a layup to make the score 13-10.

From there, the Blazers used a 15-4 run over the next five minutes to post a commanding 28-14 lead before taking a 12-point 39-27 lead into intermission.

Elms kept the pressure on Becker in the second frame maintaining a double digit lead throughout the remainder of the contest.

The Blazers shot a stellar 41.5-percent from the field for the game and 50-percent from beyond the arc highlighted by a trio of three-pointers from Donohue. Elms also limited the Hawks to just 29.4-percent shooting from the field in the win.

Murphy collected 15 of her 19 points in the opening 20 minutes and finished 9 of 10 from the free throw line.  

Normandie hit on 6 of 13 from the field en route to 14 points, while freshman forward Nicolette Martin (Colchester, Conn.) added 10 points to give Elms three players in double figures. Martin also snagged seven rebounds while junior guard Katie Condon (Sandy Hook, Conn.) dished out a game-high seven assists.

Ooms and Mojica led Becker's offense with 14 points each while Ooms tallied a team-best nine boards in the loss. Ooms also delivered a team-high five assists.

Elms returns to NECC action on Saturday, Jan. 15 when it travels to Brookline, Mass. to take on Newbury College. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m.
