Men's Golf 12th After 18 Holes At JWU Invitational

CRANSTON, R.I. ­– The Elms College men's golf team sits 12th overall on the team leaderboard after the first round of play at the Johnson & Wales University Spring Invitational, hosted at the Cranston Country Club Saturday afternoon.

The Blazers fired a first round score of 334, paced by a team-low 78 from junior Mike Fleury (West Springfield, Mass.), who owns a share of 12th overall on the individual leaderboard. Sophomore Chris Soderberg (Northampton, Mass.) was two strokes back in a tie at 23rd with an 80. Junior Brian Cowles (East Longmeadow, Mass.) carded an 85 to hold a share of 50th, while freshman Matt King (Feeding Hills, Mass.) and Michael McFadden (Northampton, Mass.) shot a 91 and a 99, respectively.

Western New England leads the tournament field with a team score of 309. Babson sits second with a 310, followed by Rhode Island College (312), Tufts (315), and Endicott (320) to round out the top five on the leaderboard. Host Johnson & Wales is sixth with a 321, trailed by UMass-Dartmouth and Nichols (325), Providence and Salem State (327), Husson (328), Elms, Southern Maine (338), Roger Williams (343), Suffolk (350), Worcester State (357), and Maine Maritime (366).

The Blazers will tee off for the second round of action Sunday afternoon.
