Men's Golf Takes Fifth at MCLA Invitational

PITTSFIELD, Mass. – The Elms College men's golf team posted their top finish of the season so far, claiming fifth overall among an 11-team field at the MCLA Invitational, held at Berkshire Hills Country Club Thursday afternoon.

The Blazers carded a team score of 327 in 18 holes of action. Freshman William Marchand (Springfield, Mass.) led Elms by shooting a team-low 78 to finish tied for seventh overall. Sophomore Chris Soderberg (Northampton, Mass.) claimed a share of 13th after firing an 80. Junior Mike Fleury (West Springfield, Mass.) came in at 23rd with an 83, while classmate Brian Cowles (East Longmeadow, Mass.) was three shots back in a tie at 29th with an 86. Freshman Matt King rounded out the Blazers golfers, shooting a 92 for 40th place.

The Rhode Island College men's golf team claimed the MCLA Invitational with a solid score of 307. The Anchormen placed all five players in the 70's to earn the victory. Derek Devereaux of Roger Williams claimed the individual title after firing a solid round of 74.  Devereaux played a steady round of even par 35 on the front nine and a two over par 39 on the back for his title.  He birdied the par three seventh hole for his lone birdie against three bogeys. Mike Sarkis of Westfield State was one back of Devereaux after posting a 75.  He birdied the par five 10th hole and the par three 17th. RIC was led by Drew Quirk and John Roderick each shot a four over par 76 to lead the team.  Austin Cilley shot a 77 while Steve Letterle and Nathan Patterson each had 78's on the 6,827 yard par 72 layout.

The Blazers will be back on the links when they host the Blazers Fall Invitational at the Hickory Ridge Country Club  in Amherst Saturday and Sunday.
